When Will We Stop the Scapegoating? - South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT)

As the 2012 presidential election approaches, it has been difficult for me to listen to the political scapegoating of Muslims and those perceived to be Muslims. A decade ago, as an attorney at the Department of Justice, I worked with colleagues in the civil rights division to address the unprecedented backlash in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. We investigated complaints of brutal hate crimes in neighborhoods, vandalism at places of worship, bullying at schools, and discrimination in the workplace aimed primarily at those who traced their origins to South Asia and the Middle East, or those who practiced Islam, Sikhism and Hinduism.

Unemployed? You fail at being Canadian - Restructure

Are you currently unemployed? According to the new Canadian citizenship guidebook for prospective immigrants, over 8.6% of unemployed Canadians are not fulfilling the Canadian responsibility of having a job, which now comes with the rights of having a Canadian citizenship.

The new Canadian citizenship guidebook was unveiled last week, redefining what it means to be Canadian. After all, new Canadian immigrants are more likely to be unemployed, which must mean—according to the authors of the guidebook—that their economic difficulties are a result of their failure adopt Canadian values. In addition, the new guidebook tells prospective immigrants, “Canada’s openness and generosity do not extend to barbaric cultural practices that tolerate spousal abuse, “honour killings,” female genital mutilation, or other gender-based violence.”

26 Asian Students Attacked at Philly High School

To the people who thought racism was a thing of the past and no longer exists in the 21st century.... you are dead wrong. Some of us probably live in the nicer places in the country with some good multicultural friends but the people in the next town/city may not be so friendly.

To all my other dearest Asian Brothers, Sisters, Families, Civil Rights Advocacy groups, Asian Activists in western countries. We know racism is very much alive and it comes in all shapes and forms in mainstream society.

While we continue to experience it's reoccurring unpleasantness and Deja Vu's, I am all convinced we are still living as second class citizens and are still sunjected to different forms of  racial oppression.

Ancient Taoist once believed the driving universal life principles are found in Yin and Yang, nature will seek neutrality and find balance between interchangeable opposing forces. Though my analogy might sound a little ancient in the philosophical works but you would eventually understand my point in our society at present.

Asian Women Golfers: Dealing with Ignorance

New Jersey - "We wanted to do something more," said Se Ri Pak, the tour's best-known Korean player and winner of five major championships. "We want to do something for the community, and for Americans."

The LPGA Tour long has been considered one of the most ethnically diverse professional sports organizations on the planet. Once dominated by Americans and Europeans, nearly a quarter of its exempt players are now from South Korea.

Last year, three of the women's four majors, including the U.S. Open, were won by Asian players (the fourth was won by Mexican Lorena Ochoa). And of the 24 top players on the Rolex World Ranking list of female pros, half are Korean -- and only five are American.

Starting Thursday, golfers from 21 countries, including the United States and Puerto Rico, teed it up for the first three rounds of the 64th U.S. Women's Open in Bethlehem, Pa. Eight of the top 16 players going into Sunday's final round were Korean.

Globalization and Racism

As globalization in its current form expands, so too does the inequality that accompanies it, as discussed throughout the Trade, Economy, & Related Issues section on this web site. Rising inequality can result in an increase in racial bias for scapegoating or advancing xenophobic and isolationist tendencies.

During French and British Imperial days for example, racial bias was ingrained within the culture itself (as explored in great detail by Edward Said, in his books such as Orientalism (Vintage Books, 1979) and Culture & Imperialism (Vintage Books, 1993)). However, an element of this is also seen in today’s period of globalization, with what A. Sivanandan describes as the increasing “xenophobic culture of globalisation” seen in some parts of the world:

[ Racism has always been both an instrument of discrimination and a tool of exploitation. But it manifests itself as a cultural phenomenon, susceptible to cultural solutions, such as multicultural education and the promotion of ethnic identities.

U.S. looks to China for support on Afghanistan: Pentagon

BEIJING (Reuters) – The United States is looking to stronger Chinese cooperation on Afghanistan, piracy, and other international troubles, a Pentagon official said on Saturday after talks that he said also addressed strains over Taiwan.

The U.S. official, David Sedney, said China's opposition to Washington's arms sales to the disputed island of Taiwan came up in the two days of discussions in Beijing, but did not overwhelm an agenda that also covered Central Asia, China's contribution to fighting piracy off the Somali coast, and nuclear weapons.

"The focus was not at all on obstacles. The focus was on how we can move forward," Sedney, a deputy assistant secretary of defense, told a news briefing after the talks.

"We both understand that it really is a new strategic environment that we're in here, with China playing the role that it does," he said.

The talks marked the first defense policy dialogue between the United States and China under the new Obama administration.

Sedney cast them as a promising start but avoided specifics.

There are A LOT, more each day. Let's keep track of them as you find them. They are a mix of anti-Olympics, anti-China, super American nationalistic, or borderline racist/xenophobic attitudes:

Hillary highlights Asia, China in speech

What can be more interesting in 2009 than Obama as president, crumbling global economies, new improved China and a future of uncertain changes?

Hillary is on her way to Asia and I am more than keen to see the outcome of this tour. Hopefully returning to announce her new friends and gain something that will be valuable for the future of America. Despite all the past tensions brewing up between the two countries, with a war mongering former president and the anti China media, has done nothing but aggravate more xenophobic tendencies towards China especially during the Olympics with the Tibet issues and selling Taiwan weapons.

Hopefully, this trip to Asia will strenghten their ties and work towards a more globally focused mission and aid struggling global economies. If anyone could ease these tensions between China and US it's would be through the new Obama leadership. This is what all Asian Americans, Candians and many other nations are concerned with.
The new mission for America is to gain back their global reputation.

New Zealanders like Asians!

Despite all the anti-Chinese coverage my western media theres a country down that under thats a little more friendlier towards asians, it's not Australia but in fact their neighbour New Zealand.

A survey showed that NZ like asians! Not your average yellow feverish or asianphile types  we usually weed out but they legitimately like asians. NZ like most western countries also went through the xenophobic phases after the early europeans colonization. However unlike some of their western cousins their attitude seems to have changed since after imigration when a sizeable asian minority had represented themselves well and reputable in one of the key contributors for their economy. In other words, they are appreciated.

This is a great article, it talks about Xenophobic behaviors of the West very clearly. Please read if interested

The Xenophobic, Anti-China Bias in Recent Media (Jeff Yang article in Washington Post)

Closet Racists and the Things They Say

I read this somewhere else on the board (by Dorothy) and it deserves its own thread.

- Sometimes, when closet racists say 'I'm not racist because I have a Black friend or [ethnic] wife', it is followed by some sort of racist comment.

- Secretly racist people love to bring up they have minority friends or wives. This is how they think: they stereotype and are racist against minorities, but they see their 'friend' or 'wife' as not of that minority. For example, Joe will think 'Asians are rude, dirty, rat people' in his head, but will also think 'my wife Sue Kim is basically White and is essentially not Asian, or not like those dirty Asians'. This is why it is possible for a White guy to marry an Asian girl, yet still be racist against Asians, and also have a secret superiority complex over Asian guys.

The Xenophobic, Anti-China Bias in Recent Media (Jeff Yang article in Washington Post)

Jeff Yang has a really interesting piece in the Washington Post on all the recent furor over dirty, tainted, poisonous food... from China: 'A Taste of Racism in the Chinese Food Scare'.

There's been a lot of talk and portrayal of China as a foul, contaminated nation, serving foul, contaminated food, and exporting foul, contaminated food to our clean, righteous United States. This rhetoric, of course, is nothing new. We've always had to deal with jokes and punchlines about the cleanliness of Chinese restaurants, along with the usual cat-eating jokes. Hell, it goes as far back as that classic schoolyard taunt, "Me Chinese, me play joke..." You know the rest.
