'Stockton's Secret War on the Streets' focus of forum

By Jennifer Torres October 24, 2009
Record Staff Writer

STOCKTON - Among the panelists scheduled to speak today at a forum on Asian gangs was a young man set to discuss how gang violence had affected his family.

Then, a little more than a week ago, he was jumped outside the Park Village Apartment buildings on Alvarado Avenue.

He reconsidered talking, said Vanna Prasit, who helps coordinate social services at the community complex, home to mainly Cambodian immigrants and their families.

"They are not comfortable coming out," Prasit said. "They don't want problems. ... It takes a lot of encouragement for families for them to make any kind of report."

The Southeast Asian immigrants who came to San Joaquin County as refugees fled war and persecution, a legacy that has contributed to gang activity among younger generations, said organizers of "The Real Gran Torino Story: Stockton's Secret War on the Streets," a forum to be held today at University of the Pacific.

Apple's degrades and cheaply sell Asian women apps.

Earlier in the month this was released in Apple's Asian women upskirt apps, probably the type that would encourage harassment but probably doesn't click when Apple is trying to sell minority. See Satirical iPhone Apps? Not Cool. Upskirt iPhone Apps? Cool.

Not bad enough? these sleazy corporations stop at nothing for a profiting since they probably pass apps because it happens to tickle their dirty Asian fetish.

The next Asian women offence only comes out a week later.

Chris Lu, Cabinet Secretary, Talks about being Asian American in the White House

The Washington Post is running a series called “Voices of Power” wherein top White House staffers are interviewed about their positions in the Obama administration. Today, the Post published video and a transcript of their conversation with Chris Lu, who, as Assistant to the President and Cabinet Secretary, is one of the most prominent Asian Americans in the White House.

The full transcript is five pages long, but I found Lu’s comments about his identity as an Asian American in the White House intriguing:

You are among the most senior Asian-Americans in the administration and in the White House. What does that mean to you?

Mr. Lu: It means a lot to me. My parents were both born in China. They moved to Taiwan for grade school and high school. They both emigrated here in the late ’50s for college.

San Jose police officers engage with brute Batons and Tasers.

A cell phone video shows San Jose police officers repeatedly using batons and a Taser gun on an unarmed San Jose State student, including at least one baton strike that appears to come after the man is handcuffed, as they took him into custody inside his home last month.

The video, made by one of the student's roommates without the knowledge of police, shows that force was used even though the suspect was on the ground, and apparently offering no physical threat to the officers. Several experts in police force said the video appears to document excessive — and possibly illegal — force by the officers. A police spokesman Friday said the department had opened a criminal investigation of the officers'

conduct, after police officials viewed a copy of the recording.

The Best Amy Tan is a Braised Amy Tan

When the Hyphen editorial team discovered that Amy Tan was the recipient of the third annual Litquake Barbary Coast Award for contribution to the Bay Area literary community, there was a flurry of confused emails: What exactly was this award and why did Amy Tan deserve to win it? I decided to go and investigate how the San Francisco literary community celebrates one of Asian America's most (in)famous writers.

As I sat in the half-full Herbst Theater this past Wednesday, in a crowd that seemed to be made up of mostly middle-aged white people, I considered what exactly I thought of Amy Tan's winning this award. Obviously, as we have covered at Hyphen extensively, though Tan indeed put "the Bay Area on the literary map" -- the point of the award as explained by Litquake's founders Jack Boulware and Jane Ganhal -- The Joy Luck Club and Tan's subsequent bibliography has irked many an Asian American.

Edison Chen and Kelly Hu to star in Romantic Comedy 'Almost Perfect'

Kelly Hu, who previously appeared in The Scorpion King and X-Men 2, has signed on to star in indie romantic comedy Almost Perfect. Hu will play a 30-something career woman who has to juggle her high-maintenance family just when she finds the perfect boyfriend. Writer/director Bertha Bay-Sa Pan said in a statement: “I am so excited to work with Kelly, who not only kicks butt as an action hero, but is also an incredibly thoughtful and nuanced actor, with a killer sense of humor.” The film will start shooting this month in New York City.

Edison Chen will appear in his first movie since his career was derailed by a sex photo scandal more than a year ago.

The 28-year-old Chinese-Canadian actor-singer will feature in the English-language comedy, “Almost Perfect,” which stars Kelly Hu, according to the Web site of New York-based production company Slew Pictures.
